La High Line es una línea ferroviaria elevada que se construyó en la década de 1930 como parte de un importante plan de mejora del barrio oeste de Manhattan. Abandonada desde 1980, en 1999 un grupo de vecinos fundó la asociación de amigos de la High Line con el objetivo de convertir la estructura industrial en espacio público. En 2002, el ayuntamiento dio luz verde al proyecto y se convocó un concurso, en el que resultaron vencedores Field Operations y Diller Scofidio + Renfo con una espectacular síntesis entre ecología y urbanismo. En las palabras de los autores del proyecto, la High Line «se convertirá en 2,5 km lineales de jardines junto al cielo, un lugar en el que el tiempo se detiene y la naturaleza establece una nueva relación con la ciudad».
The High Line is an elevated railway line which was built in 30´s as part of large-scale plan to improve the western neighborhood of Manhattan. Abandoned since 1980, in 1999 a group of neighbors founded the association Friends of the High Line, with the objective of converting the industrial structure into a public space. In 2002, the town council gave the go ahead for the project and held a competition, the winners of which were Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with a spectacular synthesis between ecology and urbanism. In the words of the authors of the project, the High Line «will be converted into a lineal gardens a mile and half long, next to the sky, a place where time stands still and nature acquires a new relationship with the town».
